A sign in Khorramshahr, southern Iran, reads “welcome to Khorramshahr, 36-million population.”  The sign dates back to the 1980s when Iraq invaded Iran and captured Khorramshahr for 578 days. A small city, Khorramshahr was liberated May 24, 1982, when millions of Iranians took to streets to victoriously celebrate the liberation.
